About The PMHNP Clinical Preceptorship & Mentoring Program
The Mindful Innovations PMHNP Clinical Preceptorship Program aims to provide high-quality clinical experience for current Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) students. The clinical practicum is a critical component that fulfills the requirements for graduation and prepares students for professional success in the field of mental health care.
During the preceptorship, students will have the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Crystal Montague, DNP, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, the founder and medical director of Mindful Innovations, who will provide individualized guidance and mentorship. This close collaboration ensures that students develop the necessary clinical knowledge and assessment skills required to deliver excellent mental health care and achieve professional success. There are also other PMHNPs available to provide preceptorship on our clinical team.
Clinical practicums are integral to nursing education, as they allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world healthcare settings. By participating in the program, students will have the opportunity to translate evidence to clinical practice, gain hands-on experience, and develop new clinical skills. This experience will enhance their competence and confidence as future PMHNPs.
Overall, the Mindful Innovations PMHNP Clinical Preceptorship Program provides a valuable opportunity for PMHNP students to gain practical experience, receive mentorship from an experienced practitioner, and develop the skills necessary to excel in their future careers in mental health care.
*It’s essential to note that the program offers flexibility between on-site (in-person) and telehealth clinical experiences.* The in-person experience provides students with direct exposure to the clinical environment, allowing them to engage in face-to-face interactions with patients and the healthcare team.

Through hands-on training, on-site clinical observation, and instruction, our students continually learn to enhance both their careers and the care they provide. To provide a robust learning experience, we limit the number of students enrolled each semester.
This program is highly competitive and is limited to 4 students per semester. Students are encouraged to apply early.
The Mindful Innovations Clinical Preceptorship Program maintains a daily 2:1 student-to-preceptor ratio to offer an ultimate engagement and create an active learning experience for our students.
During the clinical practicum, students will be supervised by a doctoral-level or master’s-level ANCC Board-Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Students will perform both in-person and telehealth encounters to build practical experience as they perform psychiatric comprehensive mental health evaluations, develop differential diagnosis based on the patient’s chief complaint, complete psychiatric interviews and progress notes, develop psychiatric mental health care plans, recommend pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, and follow-up with the patient to assess their response to treatment and monitor for side effects of the prescribed medications.
At Mindful Innovations, we frequently utilize long-acting injectables in our clinical practice; therefore, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in verbalizing knowledge of prescribing and administering these medications.
Clinical Practicum Placement
We treat patients with all psychiatric and substance use disorders across the lifespan. We have a full-service on-site lab, ADHD testing, and major depression treatment services (Spravato & Ketamine injections). Prospective students should keep in mind that we treat both children and adolescent patients. However, this population type is limited in numbers for new intakes, especially during their school year and school breaks. We will do everything possible to meet your program’s requirements, so it is essential that you clearly convey them beforehand.
Students will be scheduled at least two to three (2-3) 8-hour to 10-hour shifts per week for the regular 12–13-week semester. Any accelerated programs or requirements will be addressed on an individual basis with the preceptor.

Program Fees
Preceptors dedicate a lot of time to scheduling and rearranging their schedules to provide the optimal learning experience for their students. They also coordinate with the university and students, complete necessary paperwork, and ensure that students meet all requirements during their clinical rotations. Provide comprehensive learning tools to all students that will help facilitate their learning in clinical practice and preparation for board certification.
Per semester/quarter, we require a clinical preceptor honorarium from students requesting clinical hours.
Please note that our clinical site offers a separate psychotherapy department for the clinical programs that require therapy rotations. We can assist in fulfilling this requirement.
